101 Ways Feng Shui Can Change Your Life by Nancilee Wydra
New! "101 Ways Feng Shui
Can Change Your Life"

by Nancilee Wydra

Clutter Blocks Creativity

Dear Nancilee,

I know that part of my life's roadblocks may be because of the clutter I have in the house. Just when I thought I'd find time to start eliminating some of my own mess more stuff arrived. I inherited my mother’s possessions of 50 years. I can't seem to get past the mountains of junk and pursue goals such as writing my novel, making scrapbooks of my children's pictures and working on crafts. Any ideas?

Sincerely,
SB
Rochester, NY

Dear SB,

You are referring to two different types of clutter. One is your own, representing your own challenges. The other represents your acceptance of your mother’s view of you. Over the years I have discovered that the location of clutter in a home often points in the direction of that person’s challenges.

Location of Clutter and its Meaning

  • Entrance of a home--Fear of relationships
  • Inside a closet--Unwilling to examine emotions
  • In a kitchen--Resenting or overwhelmed with care giving
  • Next to a bed--Desire for change or escape
  • On a desk--Frustration or fear of not being in control
  • In a corner behind a door--Detachment from others
  • Under a piece of furniture--Appearances are important
  • In a cellar--Procrastinates
  • In an attic--Believes the past is better than the present
  • In a garage--Difficulty with achieving goals
  • All over--Angry at others and self

Before dealing with tips for removing clutter in any location, let’s touch upon the clutter imposed upon us by others. In a word, you choose to take in your mother’s accumulations instead of distributing them. In the same way as we hold on to a keepsakes, opting to store or keep another’s lifetime accumulations is a way of keeping them in our lives and not letting go of their influence on us. If that person contributed to your inability to actualize your desires, then keeping their stuff might prevent you from releasing old blocks. Donating their stuff could be the key that unblocks your resistance.

Here’s a way to start the process of change and clear out the clutter that seems o be preventing your best and highest self to emerge.

Your Personal Clutter

Buy or use an existing egg timer. Set aside five minutes during your best time of day. Some of us like mornings and some evening, it doesn’t matter which you choose. What matters is that you don’t try to do this when you are stressed or tired.

You must be consistent. At the same time every day set the egg timer and begin sorting, tossing or whatever you have to do to remove the clutter. When the timer goes off STOP EVEN IF YOU WANT TO GO ON! After 100 days you will experience change in yourself and your surroundings.

Your Mother’s Material Possessions

Use the five minutes each day to tag with a colorful post-it where each piece goes.

For example, you may donate some things to a charity like the Salvation Army; distribute a piece of art to all the grandchildren, nieces and nephews or your own friends. If you decide to keep, let’s say a set of dishes, you might then give away the ones you presently use. At the end of the 100-day period, the items clearly marked can be either hauled away, sent to others, or moved to a suitable location in your home. Like untangling a ball of wool, once you sort out the jumble you can use the yard to weave a dream.

Best,
