A School Basement Room
Transformed
Dear Nancilee,
I am a learning coordinator for elementary
kindergarten through 5th grade. Our school is a
traditional 3-story brick building. Teachers are most
interested in maximizing every available asset a
classroom environment can provide. Maybe the
mistakes in design we are making are a bit harmful to
our students and their learning. Here is one case in
point.
This is 7’ x 11’ room is off the
lunchroom. Its function is to be both meeting room
for teachers and a place for about 8 fourth graders to
read for 1 ¼ hours each afternoon. The floor is
grayish linoleum. The walls from floor and 2/3rd
up are beige pink. The upper 1/3 of the wall is a
creamy vanilla color.
What do you suggest? Thanking you in advance.

Dear SK
Let me get this right. You use a 7’ by 11’ room
filled with a great deal of furniture for up to eight 9
year olds and as a teacher’s meeting room? There are a
couple of serious feng shui problems in this scenario.
First of all the children biologically become tire in
the afternoon and like being out in nature, this room
needs to engage all the senses. This would add vitality
to a very yin or enervating room.
- I suggest you have four murals painted that are at
least 5’wide by 3’high on paper by the students
representing the four seasons. Every four years the
murals should be changed. Why not use this opportunity
for encouraging creativity and expression of Wisconsin?
Perhaps the Chamber of Commerce can sponsor it and the
children can receive some publicity? If you can’t see
change and nature, a replication is necessary.
- Paint the walls a pale orange for orange are the
color of connections and when we are cut off, (no
windows) this is a good color to use.
- It is essential to see movement and her intermittent
sounds. Perhaps a mild sounding wind chime can provide
both engaged by a tabletop fan.
- Scent may prove more difficult to infuse in the
space for one person’s rose can be another’s skunk.
Food and spice scents are best to try for they can be
diffused from real vegetation. I would try sage for
winter, nutmeg for spring, lemon and orange peels for
summer, cinnamon for fall.
Finally, here are the layout suggestions.
- The computer desk and the other desk probably won’t
be used at the same time. If they typically are you can
separate them in order for the chairs not to hit if used
at the same time.
- The easel with a book would be wonderful outside the
door announcing the room’s intention.
- A rug rolled out each afternoon will provide the
additional seating necessary for the fourth graders.
That and four floor pillows could provide the relaxed
atmosphere that reading is experienced in life outside
of a classroom.
The elimination of some files and bookcases and the
addition of the murals will help those using the room
thrive. Let me know how it works.
