Change Your Kitchen, Change Your Life
Nancilee,
I am thinking of redoing my kitchen. Not just the
usual upgrade of cabinets and appliances but changing
the location.
Fifteen years ago I purchased a lot where the total
square footage had to be under 1,000. I designed a small
house and the kitchen was proportioned appropriately.
Since that time county water and sewer has come to our
neighborhood permitting us to have a larger house. Today
my house is over 2,000 square feet.
The original downstairs complete with tiny kitchen,
dining area and living room is now practically unused in
favor of the newer dramatic living room and I feel like
Cinderella before meeting the Prince when sequestered in
the kitchen unable to see what’s going on.
Can you help?

Dear ML
Kitchens evokes childhood memories of good smells and
was "the" place many of us gravitated as we
crashed through the door after school. In some ways the
kitchen is the Blarney stone of home.
What you have created by adding on a new living room
in a different segment of your house is a double heart
of home. Also the kitchen is cut off visually and
auditory contact in both the old and new gathering room.
Here’s a way of creating another kind of smaller
cozier gathering space downstairs within visual distance
of the kitchen and making the kitchen a hub rather than
a sequestered away work area. Notice the change in the
main entrance. Also the punched out kitchen area into
the front porch will give an one person reading area on
the front porch.
As you can see without too many structural changes,
the new kitchen will be in a bird’s eye view of the
comings and goings of all household members. When in the
kitchen the three staircases leading to private spaces
will be in view and when entertaining or cooking for my
household, you will be in a position to see and hear.
