Marriage Against a Wall
Dear Nancilee,
My husband and I are having problems.
In a discussion last night he told me that he wanted his
side of the bed back! The side he wants back has a night
table whereas the other side is basically against a
wall. Anyway, because he missed the table for his
"stuff" while watching TV in bed, he got into
the habit of watching TV at night downstairs in the
living room leaving me upstairs by myself for about four
years now. Is this bad feng shui at work? To make a long
story short, I told him he could have his side back
'cause I don't really care about the night table issue.
We each have overhead lights above the bed, so I can
still read. Am I crazy to think this has affected my
marriage or am I on to something!

Dear NF,
No, you are not crazy. In fact, there
are a couple of issues at work here that detract from a
balanced, happy relationship. First of all, a double bed
sided by one of the walls places one partner in the
significantly more confining location. The lack of a
piece of furniture for personal items in combination
with the restrictive location causes the person on the
wall side of the bed to literally feel backed against
the wall which biologically advances feeling defensive.
Like an animal cowered in the corner
who becomes aggressive to facilitate escaping, your
husband feels angry and defensive by being on the wall
side of the bed and displaces these emotions to you.
Yes, give him back his side, but more importantly
consider moving the bed so that no matter how small, you
too will have space to not subconsciously feel cornered.
We certainly don't want you to become the angry one.
Love,
