Fear of Success at Work
Dear Nancilee,
I have been reading your books and watched your video
on feng shui and since moving things around and
following your guidelines, I have noticed definite
improvements in my career. In fact, I have just been
promoted. While things are going great, I am
experiencing an underlying feeling of uncertainty about
my job. I am getting a new office where the placement of
the doors makes me nervous. There are two entrance doors
on one wall. My employees use one door and I use the
other door. I can’t figure out where to put my desk
because there is also a closet door opposite these two
doors and another wall has a window. Here’s the room’s
layout do you have any suggestions?
Thank you,
AR. Lancaster, CA (via

Dear AR,
Almost all of us suffer some anxiety when faced with
change. Living up to other’s expectations can trigger
deep-seated insecurities. It’s only when these
anxieties affect your overall mental, emotional or
physical health that there is cause for concern. That
said, let’s commence with solving your dilemma and
avert any future troubles.
Your desk should face the entrance doors. Facing the
place of entry is empowering and being experienced as
powerful can be advantageous to a person in leadership
position. Naturally, personal power should not be
wielded unreasonably for it is always a leader’s job
to empower those working under you too.
If you are right-handed, the east-facing window might
impact upon tasks requiring writing tasks during the
morning hours. Angle your desk as shown in my suggested
cure drawing.
It is equally important to neutralize the door behind
you. In our biological origin we are naturally fearful
of penetrations into a protected space. While I am sure
you don’t believe something is going to pop out of the
closet and harm you, it’s not that simple to turn off
a limbic system reaction to the threat of danger. I
suggest you loop a bell over the closet door handle or
install a sliding latch on the outside. You know the
bell would ring should the door be opened and realize
too that a latched door will not be opened without your
intervention.
Furthermore, I want to remind you that promotions are
usually well deserved. Thus doing your best while
feeling empowered and secure is the ticket to success.
Best future,
