A Fall Equinox practice for releasing what weighs you down
The Fall Equinox invites us into a major energetic shift.
It is a threshold between seasons, a moment when day and night come into balance and we are reminded that life is always asking us to release, recalibrate, and begin again.
This is also a powerful time to look honestly at what we are carrying.
Old habits.
Outgrown relationships.
The need to please everyone.
The belief that we have to do everything ourselves.
The guilt that comes when we say no.
Sometimes what weighs us down isn’t one big thing. It is the accumulation of all the little things we have been carrying for too long.
And if we want to step more fully into our power, we have to be willing to put some of that weight down.
What does real self-care look like?
We often think of self-care as something we add to our lives: a massage, a meditation, a workout, a vacation, a healthier meal. All of these can be wonderful forms of care.
But sometimes the most profound self-care is subtraction.
It is knowing when to say no.
It is setting a boundary without feeling the need to explain yourself.
It is recognizing that someone else’s disappointment does not automatically mean you have done something wrong.
It is giving yourself permission to stop carrying responsibilities, expectations, and emotional burdens that were never yours to carry in the first place.
For me, this is part of what it means to have a heart like a feather.
A light heart doesn’t mean a life without difficulty. It means we become more conscious about what we allow to live inside us.
A Not-To-Do List Ritual
Find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted. If you have a feather, place it in front of you. If you don’t have one, simply imagine one. The feather is a reminder that you can move through life with greater lightness without becoming less powerful.
Light a candle if you wish. Take several slow breaths and allow yourself to become present.
What are you ready to stop doing?
Perhaps you are ready to stop saying yes when you really mean no.
Stop answering every message immediately.
Stop taking responsibility for everyone’s feelings.
Stop trying to convince someone to understand you.
Stop comparing your life to someone else’s.
Stop postponing your own needs until everyone else is taken care of.
Stop carrying an old story about who you are simply because you’ve been telling it for years.
Write down whatever comes to you.
Don’t try to come up with the perfect answer. Let the answer come from your body, your intuition, your deeper knowing.
Then ask yourself:
What would become possible if I stopped carrying this?
That question can open a surprisingly large door.
Because when we release what is no longer ours, we don’t simply create empty space. We create space for something new: inspiration, creativity, connection, pleasure, possibility and a deeper relationship with ourselves.
Then place your hand over your heart and say:
I am willing to put down what I no longer need to carry.
I release what is not mine.
I make space for what is true, nourishing and life-giving.
My heart can be light, and I can still be strong.
Take a few more breaths.
Finally, ask yourself one more question:
What do I want to make room for now?
Don’t rush to answer it. Let the question live with you.
That is the invitation of a heart like a feather:
To release what weighs you down without giving away your strength.
To create space for what wants to emerge.
And to move into the next season with a little more room to breathe.
