We are very pleased to welcome Chrissie Blaze to
SoulfulLiving.com as our newest monthly columnist!
Each month, Chrissie will share one of her Eight Steps
to Inner Fitness from her book, "Workout for the Soul."
Step 1 - Preparing Your Temple
Last month we talked about the
eternal spiritual quest of the awakened person. This
month we will discuss how you can prepare for this inner
journey by creating your own "temple" or
sacred space.
Find a suitable area of your home that you can
reserve exclusively for your spiritual practices, so
that in time it becomes imbued with the high vibrations
of your meditations, inspirations, prayers and healing
work. The more you bring this space alive with spiritual
work and uplifting thoughts, the easier it will be for
you to connect with your higher self.
We do have a higher self and many of us are aware of
this; some are guided by it completely. Our higher self
urges us to live in accordance with the great laws of
the universe, in the knowledge that only then can true
freedom dawn. The majority of us, however, are still
battling with our lower selves and the iron grip of our
egos. The more you visit your sacred space to contact
this true part of your nature, the more the grip of the
conscious mind will be lessened. Through your efforts,
you will light a spiritual flame in your sacred space
that will nourish you and will spread outwards towards
the nourishment of the whole world.
Because this area of your home and of your life will
become your sanctuary and your spiritual retreat, and
the place where you can find great joy, peace and love,
it is important that you select it carefully. Choose a
space that just feels good to you and where you can, if
possible, face east, while performing your daily ritual.
The sun – which is constantly radiating the
life-giving pranas or universal life forces that are the
basis of manifestation in our solar system - rises in
the East. The East is always associated with mystical
power and spiritual practices, so that facing in this
direction will help to enhance your spiritual workout.
Once you have found an area that feels right to you,
the next step is to build an altar or sacred space to
focus and enhance your spiritual practices. On your
altar you can place photographs and objects that are
sacred and significant to you, that uplift and inspire
you. This altar does not have to be grand, or even
bigger than a few precious objects on a shelf, but the
important thing is that you love it. In time, your altar
and surrounding area will become like your inner
sanctuary that is yours alone, which you will want to
visit as often as you can. In time, you will find that
just looking at your altar will bring you peace and
strength.
Keep your altar area very simple and gradually build
it over time. You may begin with just a picture of your
own spiritual teacher, one of the Indian saints or sages
for example, or a beautiful photograph of Mother Earth.
The artifacts on my altar include pieces of rock from
holy mountains, grains of sand from a sacred beach and
blessed water. I also have a candle and incense that I
light.
The objects on my altar all have mystical or symbolic
meaning to me. Yours will be very personal to you and
therefore should be selected by you very carefully. Do
not rush in collecting your objects together. It may
take you years to complete your altar but you will find
that it will grow and unfold as you do. The secret is to
hold the thought of your sacred space in your mind
whenever you have a moment of quiet. Visualize it being
filled with light and power; feel a link with this in
your mind’s eye and feel the light and power from your
altar flowing back to you. If you do this practice you
will find that over time wonderful artifacts will be
given to you, or you will somehow track them down.
The desire to develop spiritually has great power,
allowing you to start to develop a mystical flow that
will bring to you those things that you need for your
enlightenment. These objects will be the correct ones
for you because of the link you have established with
your altar and because of the light and power you have
visualized there. This occurs because of the law that
what you think and visualize eventually comes into
manifestation. Given this law, you must always employ
discrimination in your choices, and only use objects
that are uplifting and inspirational.
It is good to have each of the five elements
represented during your practices i.e. earth (in the
form of a piece of rock or some sand), fire (in the form
of a candle or incense), a bowl of water, air and ether.
Ether is the so-called "empty" space between
matter and the primary force from which the other
elements flow. Using all five elements brings balance
and power to the ritual you are about to perform. Ether
is the primary force from which the other elements flow.
Through the elements flow the universal life forces.
If you have a table or proper altar area, you may
wish to cover it with a beautiful piece of cloth. Select
vibrant, rich colors that you enjoy and that are
mystical and uplifting in quality. Violet, for example,
has an extremely high vibration, so that shades of
violet, purple and magenta are excellent choices.
You can use a green light over or shining onto your
altar, which again is extremely beneficial. The color
green is the most harmonious and balancing color and can
be shone on anyone safely. Obviously light has different
frequencies and some colors may not be appropriate for
one’s spiritual practices. I would not use, for
example, the higher frequency colors such as red. It is
safer to use green, which is beneficial to everyone and
can greatly assist in your spiritual practices and in
lifting the atmosphere in your "temple."
Make sure that you arrange the items on your altar
lovingly, carefully and intuitively. The whole effect
should be harmonious, balanced and beautiful. My own
altar is extremely powerful and I am always aware of its
power even before doing any practices. It has a mystical
life of its own! Start building your altar until you
feel the power build; this will be beneficial to you and
those who live with you. It will also offer some
protection to your home and family.
Once you have created the atmosphere you desire, then
you should leave the room for a few minutes to allow the
vibrations to settle. Then, when you are ready to begin
your spiritual practices, return to the room and attune
yourself to the wonderful atmosphere you have created.

Cooperation – Foundation for the
Future
Dr. George King (1919-1997) was my Spiritual Master
from 1972 until his passing in 1997. He was an
enlightened Western Master of Yoga and Founder/President
of The Aetherius Society, who had gained the highest
states of consciousness. This monthly series, Workout
for the Soul is based on his profound spiritual
teachings. Each month I will present you with a glimpse
into the wisdom and personality of this amazing man and
Master.
"The future of the Earth is now in your hands,
for tomorrow's foundation is being built by every
thought and action of today. Take your hands from
the pockets of isolation and join them together in
cooperation and soon such a line will be formed as to
span the whole world. A line of brothers, who
together will influence today's action and thus mold
tomorrow's outcome. Who have not only convictions
but the courage of those convictions. Who are
fired by such spiritual sincerity transcending all else,
that they can change the outlook of the world and can
succeed where science and politics are now hopelessly
failing. This is the power that will guarantee
that the young children of today will grow, learn and
live in peace.
