Finding the right bouquet

Many of us buy flowers as a means of recognising or celebrating an occasion rather than as a spontaneous idea. In the ancient and unspoken language of fluorography the occasion and the sentiment dictates the type of flowers that you should be looking for. It is a handy thing to understand the meaning behind a bouquet of flowers. Whether you're giving flowers to say thank you, sorry, or Happy Mother's day, every bloom has a story to tell and even the colour of the flower can tell the recipient exactly what you wish to say with no words needed. There are of course some flowers such as the red rose or the forget-me-not that have clear cultural attachments.

Other blooms are more of a mystery – especially since the language of fluorography has largely fallen out of use these days. For example did you know that giving a primrose tells the recipient “I can’t live without you”, a white violet says “let's take a chance” and the purple hyacinth declares “please forgive me” to its recipient?

This lack of knowledge and understanding makes some people nervous about giving a gift of flowers, but a good florist will understand which blooms are relevant to the message you wish to convey. Online florists such as Interflora even allow you to shop by occasion and they offer next day delivery on the majority of their entire flowers range when you order online. A simple and effective way to get your message across, there really is a bouquet to suit any occasion.

So why not delve into the history of fluorography and rediscover the language that the Victorians used as a supplement to their daily interactions as a matter of course? Fluorography not only teaches us the relevance of the bloom but of the colour and even number of flowers given in any situation. In this secret language of flowers even the hand that a gift is given in can state an unspoken yes-or-no, and depending on how a flower is worn can betray a person’s mood.

Giving a bunch of flowers really is a beautiful and rewarding way to communicate with your loved ones.
